SPORTING BARBADOS



CRICKET

Cricket is the national sport of Barbados and the West Indies. Barbados is one of the international capitals of cricket and always contributes a large contingent to the West Indies team. Names like Sir Garfield Sobers, the three W's, Wes Hall, the late Keith Boyce, Desmond Haynes, Gordon Greenidge and David Allen come to mind immediately as Barbadians who have contributed greatly to West Indies cricket. Current players include Ian Bradshaw and Corey Collymore.

HORSE RACING

Thoroughbred Horse Racing in Barbados has taken place at the Garrison Savannah for over 150 years. The Barbados Turf Club organizes three seasons of racing per year, which typically run from January to April; May to August and from October to December, normally every other Saturday. Racing usually start around 1:00 pm and finsh by 5:45 pm. Entrance fees to the various stands ranges from Bds $10.00 to $100.00 for the day. Special (higher) prices apply to Gold Cup Day in early March. Admission is free to the grounds.

GOLF

Barbados Golf Club, located at Durants in the southern parish of Christ Church, has become the soul of golfing in Barbados for local players as well as hotel guests and visitors cruising through the Caribbean. The course was approved and sanctioned by the PGA European Tour to host a PGA Seniors Tournament in 2003 and it has also hosted the Barbados Open on several occasions.

The challenges, rewards and scenic views of the course encourage players of all abilities to play with determination to hone their skills while enjoying the company of friends amidst tropical surroundings.
